The Client’s Vision

25 seat 1700 sq ft private cinema Ichalkaranji Kolhapur Bowers Wilkins by Sound Innovators

This was a landmark dedicated home theatre project executed in Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur, designed as a true private cinema for a 25-seater audience. The theatre room measured 1700 sq. ft., supported by an additional 150 sq. ft. projection room, and the client wanted a large-format cinema experience with powerful sound, precise surround coverage, a true CinemaScope image, and complete automation control.

The objective was not to create an ordinary media room but a serious reference-style theatre that could perform like a commercial cinema while still maintaining the luxury and comfort expected in a private residence. From the very beginning, the project was planned around immersive sound, a massive screen, full acoustic isolation, clean power, and professional-grade control. The project took 24 months to complete and was finished in June 2017, with a total cost of ₹2.81 crore including calibration.

Speaker System

The Speaker System — Immersive Cinema Across Every Seat

The acoustic foundation of this installation was built using a carefully engineered Bowers & Wilkins speaker layout. Since the room was very large and had 25 seats, the challenge was to create a sound field that remained convincing across most of the seating area. The theatre was therefore designed with separate front, centre, surround, surround back, Atmos, and subwoofer sections so each part of the soundtrack could be reproduced with clarity and impact.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CT 8LR

Front Left & Right Speakers

The front left and right channels were handled by CT 8LR speakers, each rated at 1000 watts. These speakers formed the main screen-stage foundation of the theatre and delivered the scale, authority, and dynamic impact needed for a large dedicated cinema. Their role was to create a powerful and stable front soundstage for music, effects, and action sequences.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CT 8 CC

Centre Channel

The centre channel used a CT 8 CC speaker rated at 1000 watts. This speaker was responsible for dialogue and screen anchoring, which made it one of the most important elements in the room. It ensured that voices stayed locked to the picture with clarity and consistency across the seating rows.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CT 7.3 LCRS

Surround Channels × 10

For the surround layer, we used 10 CT 7.3 LCRS speakers rated at 200 watts each. These speakers were distributed around the room to create side and rear ambience, directional movement, and immersive surround effects. Their placement was critical in helping nearly every seat receive proper surround envelopment.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CT 8.2 LCRS

Surround Back Channels × 2

The rear surround section used 2 CT 8.2 LCRS speakers rated at 500 watts each. These speakers completed the back part of the soundfield and helped add depth, rear imaging, and stronger spatial separation. In a theatre of this size, the surround back layer plays an important role in making the room feel truly wrapped in sound.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CCM 7.3

Atmos Front Height Speakers × 2

The overhead layer included 2 CCM 7.3 speakers rated at 200 watts each for the front Atmos positions. These speakers contributed to the 21.10 Dolby Atmos configuration and added height, movement, and three-dimensional realism above the audience, helping make the cinema experience much more immersive and lifelike.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CCM 682

Atmos Height Speakers × 4

Four CCM 682 speakers rated at 150 watts each provided additional Atmos height coverage across the 25-seat room. Together with the CCM 7.3 units, they completed the overhead layer of the 21.10 configuration and ensured overhead effects reached every row of the seating area with consistency.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins CT SW15

Subwoofers × 10

The low-frequency section was built around 10 CT SW15 subwoofers, giving the theatre a powerful and evenly distributed bass foundation. In a 25-seater room, this larger subwoofer array helps deliver stronger impact and more consistent low-end performance across the seating area.

Electronics

Electronics — High-End Processing and Power Delivery

To manage a theatre of this complexity, we used a very advanced electronics chain. The processor and amplifiers had to handle a large number of channels without losing control or refinement. This is where the system’s performance moved from simply loud to truly cinematic and precise.

JBL Synthesis SDP-75

32-Channel Surround Processor

The main processor was the JBL Synthesis SDP-75, a 32-channel high-end surround processor supporting Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D. This was the brain of the theatre and handled all immersive audio processing, channel routing, and decoding. In a large-format theatre, the processor has to remain stable and accurate, and the SDP-75 was ideal for that role.

Jeff Rowland Model 525

Front LCR Power Amplifiers × 3 (Bridged)

For the front LCR channels, we used 3 Jeff Rowland Model 525 amplifiers in bridged configuration, delivering 900 watts per amplifier. These amplifiers were selected to give the front stage the current, control, and headroom needed for high-output cinema playback. Their job was to keep the front speakers powerful yet refined, even during demanding scenes.

🇯🇵 Japan

Rotel RMB 1585

Surround Power Amplifiers × 2 (200W × 5ch)

The surround channels were powered by 2 Rotel RMB 1585 multichannel amplifiers rated at 200 watts x 5 channels each. These amplifiers were responsible for driving the many surround speakers around the room with consistency and reliability. Their role was important in maintaining balance throughout the side and rear sound field.

🇯🇵 Japan

Rotel RB1582

Atmos Power Amplifiers × 6 (200W × 2ch)

The Atmos speakers were powered by 6 Rotel RB1582 stereo power amplifiers rated at 200 watts x 2 channels each. The overhead layer requires clean and stable power so the height effects remain precise and smooth. These amplifiers provided the necessary support for the large number of ceiling channels used in the room.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Bowers & Wilkins SA1000

Subwoofer Amplifiers × 5

The five SA1000 amplifiers handled the subwoofer section and supplied the power required for deep bass reproduction. The low-frequency system needed strong and controlled amplification because bass defines the physical feel of cinema sound. This ensured the theatre had the impact expected from a premium private cinema.

Projection System

Projection System — Large CinemaScope Presentation

The visual system was designed to match the scale of the audio. Since this was a dedicated theatre with a very large seating capacity, the screen and projector had to deliver a presentation that felt truly cinematic from the first row to the last. The result was a large-format CinemaScope image with correct placement and a proper projection-room setup.

🇯🇵 Japan

JVC DLA-X900 Projector

Projector

The main projector used in this theatre was the JVC DLA-X900, a high-end D-ILA home cinema projector known for strong contrast, accurate color reproduction, and excellent black levels. It uses three 0.7-inch D-ILA panels with 4K e-shift technology, which gives it the ability to present a sharp and detailed image suited for dedicated cinema use. For a theatre of this scale, that kind of projection performance is important because the image must stay stable, rich, and cinematic even on a very large screen. The projector was mounted on a Euromet projector stand in the projection room to ensure correct alignment, stability, and long-term reliability.

🇺🇸 USA

Panamorph Anamorphic Lens

Anamorphic Lens

The Panamorph anamorphic lens was used to achieve a true 2.35:1 CinemaScope presentation and to make full use of the wide theatre screen. An anamorphic lens works by expanding the projected image so widescreen films fill the entire scope screen without wasting brightness on black bars, which can improve screen utilization and perceived image impact. In a premium theatre like this, that means the client gets a more theatrical image with stronger brightness and a wider cinematic feel. The lens also helps the system look and behave more like a commercial cinema, which was exactly the goal of this room.

Elite Screens 300-inch Acoustically Transparent Screen

300″ 2.35:1 Custom Projection Screen

The projection surface was a custom-made 300-inch 2.35:1 acoustically transparent screen from Elite Screens. Acoustically transparent screen material allows sound to pass through with minimal attenuation, so the front left, centre, and right speakers can be placed behind the screen in the correct cinema position. This is a major advantage in a dedicated theatre because it keeps dialogue anchored to the picture and preserves the visual cleanliness of the front wall. The large 300-inch scope format made the room feel truly grand and helped match the scale of the 25-seat theatre.

Signal Chain and Power Protection

Signal Chain and Power Protection

For source playback, the theatre used an Oppo 105EU universal Blu-ray player and Apple TV. These sources provided both premium disc playback and streaming flexibility, allowing the client to enjoy cinema content in different formats. In a theatre built at this level, source quality matters because the rest of the system is capable of revealing every detail in the signal path.

To maintain clean performance, we used Synergistic Research power protectors and purifiers to guard the system against power fluctuations. The installation also used Kimber Kable speaker cables, AudioQuest power cables, HDMI cables, and interconnects. These helped support clean signal transfer and stable operation across the many channels and long cable runs used in the theatre.

Kimber Kable speaker cables and AudioQuest power cables, HDMI cables, and interconnects were used throughout the installation. These helped support clean signal transfer and stable operation across the many channels and long cable runs used in the theatre.

Soundproofing and Acoustic Treatment

Soundproofing and Acoustic Treatment

The theatre received 100% soundproofing along with the necessary acoustic treatment. This was essential for a large, high-output cinema because sound leakage would affect the rest of the property and also reduce the sense of isolation inside the room. The soundproofing allowed the theatre to remain fully contained and gave the system a proper cinematic environment.

Acoustic treatment was equally important because a theatre this large needs controlled reflections and balanced response across the entire audience area. The treatment helped improve clarity, imaging, and surround accuracy while supporting the final calibration results. This is one of the reasons the room was able to achieve proper surround effect for around 90% of the seating positions.

Control System

Control System — Crestron AV and Lighting Automation

The complete theatre and lighting setup was integrated with Crestron AV and lighting controls. This allowed the client to manage the room with a single intelligent platform rather than dealing with separate equipment and multiple remotes. With Crestron, the theatre became easier to use, faster to activate, and far more elegant in daily operation.

The control system added convenience and professionalism to the overall experience. Lighting, AV switching, and theatre operation could all be handled smoothly, which is exactly what a high-end private cinema should offer. It made the room not only powerful in performance, but also refined in day-to-day use.
