The Client’s Vision

30 seat Dolby Atmos preview theatre Juhu Mumbai Ascendo CCRM 12P by Sound Innovators

This project in Juhu, Mumbai was created as a dedicated 30-seater preview theatre designed to deliver a serious Dolby Atmos cinema experience in a professional-style environment. The objective was to build a room that could offer scale, power, immersion, and cinematic precision while still remaining refined enough for repeat listening and critical viewing. Unlike a conventional home theatre, a preview theatre has to feel more disciplined in its sound and presentation, because the room is expected to perform with consistency across multiple seats.

The design approach therefore focused on three things from the beginning: strong front-stage authority, convincing surround immersion, and a projection system that could support a large-format widescreen presentation. We also paid close attention to sound isolation and acoustic treatment so the room could preserve impact and clarity without becoming uncontrolled. From installation to final calibration it took approximately 29 days to complete, and the total project cost came to ₹1.71 crore.

Design Challenge

The Design Challenge

The fundamental challenge of a 30-seat preview theatre is that it must perform at a far higher standard than a residential cinema. Every seat has to receive consistent imaging, surround envelopment, and bass impact not just the sweet spot. The front stage had to carry the authority of a commercial screen without the benefit of a dedicated cinema building. The surround field had to wrap a broad audience area convincingly, which required a carefully distributed speaker count rather than a minimal home theatre layout. The overhead Atmos layer had to feel genuinely three-dimensional rather than decorative. The low-frequency architecture had to be deep enough to create physical involvement without becoming uneven across rows. And all of this had to be achieved within a timeframe of 29 days, with acoustic treatment and isolation executed alongside the installation to ensure the final calibration had a disciplined acoustic foundation to work with.

Speaker System

The Speaker System : Reference Cinema Dynamics

The loudspeaker system for this preview theatre was built around Ascendo cinema speakers and subwoofers, chosen for their ability to deliver scale, output, and controlled cinematic detail. Because this was a 30-seater room, the system had to do more than sound powerful it had to maintain believable imaging and surround continuity across a broader audience area. The result was a layered Dolby Atmos layout with clear separation between the front stage, surround field, overhead effects, and low-frequency foundation.

Front Stage

Front LCR : Screen-Stage Authority

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo CCRM 12-P

Front Left / Centre / Right × 3

The front left, centre, and right channels used 3 Ascendo CCRM 12-P speakers. These formed the main screen-stage foundation of the theatre and were responsible for dialogue, musical energy, and front-impact dynamics. In a preview theatre, the front channels must sound authoritative and stable, and the CCRM 12-P was selected to deliver exactly that kind of large-format cinema presence across all 30 seats.

Surround Field

Surrounds : Envelopment Across the Full Audience

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo CCRM 5-P

Side Surrounds × 10

The side surround layer used 10 Ascendo CCRM 5-P speakers distributed to create broad and convincing envelopment essential in a preview theatre where multiple seats need to experience proper surround effects. Their placement helped the room feel continuous and cinematic rather than front-heavy, with smooth panning across the entire audience area.

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo CCRM 6-P

Back Surrounds × 4

The rear surround section used 4 Ascendo CCRM 6-P speakers to complete the rear sound field and give the room stronger depth and directional realism. Their role was important in ensuring the back half of the room felt as immersive as the front, preventing the rear rows from experiencing a diminished surround effect that would undermine the theatre’s consistency claim.

Atmos Height Layer

Top Speakers : Three-Dimensional Height Effects

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo CCRM 5-P

Top / Height Channels × 6

The overhead layer used 6 Ascendo CCRM 5-P speakers as top channels, adding the height and movement required for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D playback. These speakers helped the room achieve a genuinely immersive three-dimensional sound field where overhead transitions and atmospheric effects feel believable and well-integrated rather than merely directional.

Low-Frequency System

Subwoofer System : Infrasonic Foundation

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo SMSG 32 Infrasonic Subwoofer

Main Subwoofer × 1

The Ascendo SMSG 32 Infrasonic subwoofer provided the deep low-frequency extension needed to make large-scale cinema content feel physically involving. In a room of this scale, the infrasonic layer is what defines how large and visceral the cinema experience feels and the SMSG 32 was selected to deliver that foundation with authority and control.

🇩🇪 Germany

Ascendo SMSG 12 Subwoofers

Support Subwoofers × 8

Eight Ascendo SMSG 12 support subwoofers worked alongside the infrasonic unit to provide the distributed bass support needed for consistency across all 30 seats. In a preview theatre, bass is not just about impact it also defines how uniform the physical involvement feels from front row to back row, and this array ensured no seat was left without proper low-end presence.

Electronics

Electronics : Processing and Power With Precision

The electronics chain was selected to manage a demanding immersive layout with control and reliability. In a preview theatre, the processor and amplifiers must support not only high output but also precision, because the room is expected to perform in a more disciplined way than an ordinary media room. The system was therefore built around high-performance immersive processing and dedicated multi-channel amplification.

🇫🇷 France

StormAudio EVO Digital Immersive Sound Processor

Immersive Processor

The StormAudio EVO Digital served as the brain of the room, handling signal management, surround decoding, and immersive channel processing for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D simultaneously. In a high-performance preview theatre, the processor has to organize many channels with precision, and this component played a central role in making the entire system feel unified, cinematic, and properly calibrated.

🇫🇷 France

StormAudio PA 8 MK3 ULTRA

Power Amplifier

The StormAudio PA 8 MK3 ULTRA provided clean, high-current power to the most critical speaker channels in the system. Its ultra-grade specification was chosen to ensure the front stage and primary surround speakers received the stability and dynamic headroom that a reference preview theatre demands, particularly during the most demanding passages of large-format cinema content.

🇫🇷 France

StormAudio PA 16 MK3

Power Amplifier

The StormAudio PA 16 MK3 provided the channel count needed to power the full Atmos surround and height speaker array cleanly and consistently. Its 16-channel format was the practical solution to driving a large speaker count without compromising on amplifier quality or stability, ensuring every channel from the side surrounds to the overhead speakers remained controlled and dynamic.

Projection System

StormAudio EVO PA8 MK3 Ultra reference preview theatre Juhu Mumbai by Sound Innovators

Projection System : Large-Format Laser Cinema

The visual system was designed to match the authority of the audio system and deliver a true widescreen cinema presentation. Since this was a preview theatre rather than a casual media room, the projection chain had to feel bold, precise, and properly proportioned. We therefore built the visual system around a premium laser projector, anamorphic lens, and large 2.40:1 screen.

🇯🇵 Japan

JVC DLA-NZ9 8K Laser Projector

Projector

The JVC DLA-NZ9 is an 8K laser home cinema projector designed for high-end large-screen environments. A projector of this level was important because the room needed strong brightness, refined contrast, and long-term consistency suitable for serious cinematic viewing. In a preview setting, image quality has to feel confident and substantial, and the NZ9 gave the room that premium visual authority session after session.

🇺🇸 USA

Panamorph Anamorphic Lens

Anamorphic Lens

To achieve the proper widescreen presentation, the projector was paired with a Panamorph anamorphic lens. This allowed the system to create a true CinemaScope-style image and make full use of the screen’s wide 2.40:1 format. In a cinema environment, an anamorphic lens is what makes the image feel broader, more theatrical, and better matched to large-format movie content — preserving the full native resolution of the NZ9 across the entire screen width.

🇺🇸 USA

Custom 270″ 2.40:1 Ratio Screen

Projection Screen

The image was projected on a custom-made 270-inch 2.40:1 ratio screen, giving the room the scale expected from a genuine preview theatre. This wide screen format was ideal for cinema content and helped create a more immersive, professionally styled viewing experience. In a room with 30 seats, screen size plays a major role in making the audience feel connected to the image rather than simply watching a large display.

Acoustic Treatment & Isolation

Acoustic Treatment and Isolation

To preserve the immersive Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D effect, we took as much care as possible with sound isolation and completed the necessary acoustic treatment throughout the room. In a theatre like this, acoustic discipline is what allows the system to sound controlled rather than merely loud. The treatment helped improve clarity, maintain focus, and support stronger spatial separation between channels — ensuring that the carefully positioned speaker array performed as designed rather than being undermined by reflections and room modes.

Sound isolation was equally important because a preview theatre needs to hold its energy inside the room while minimizing disturbance outside it. Together, the isolation and treatment helped the theatre feel more composed, cinematic, and technically complete. This work was a major part of achieving the final surround effect the project demanded, and it was executed in parallel with the installation to meet the 29-day completion target.
